Goo Goo Dolls still in the game

Monday, March 12, 2007
SUE WHITETHE SAGINAW NEWS

It was a long time coming, coaxing the Goo Goo Dolls to the Saginaw stage, but on Sunday, a capacity crowd of fans got a little bit of everything they've waited for at TheDow Event Center.

John Rzeznik, for starters.

"I decided to dress up because it's Sunday, you know," the frontman told a house that never sat down from the first flash of stage lights. But the pinstripe suit didn't mask the gum-popping, punk swagger that brought long-time fans and a few new ones in for a closer look.

Those who prefer their rock with a little more edge kept bass player Robby Takac in sight, ricocheting across the stage, coming forward now and again to put some muscle in the music.

And in one of the better-paced sets we've seen, a band with more than two decades under its guitar straps delivered a musical mix that proves it's still very much in the game.

The night moved easily from the megahit "Slide" to the new "Feel the Silence," with fans barely missing a beat of Rzeznik's profound musings. Up-tempo beats, such as "Stay With You," balanced out the mellower, more melancholy "Acoustic #3."

Black balloons bounced overhead -- the song is Rzeznik's nod to a friend who struggled out of drug abuse -- while the opening notes of "Name" and "Broadway" triggered choruses of approval.

While several songs brought out the choir of the Goo Goo Dolls' faithful -- including many from the new "Let Love In" album -- it was "Iris" and its now-classic "I Just Want You to Know Who I Am" that drew even the occasional fan into the musical fray.

Perhaps the boldest move the Goo Goo Dolls made in a tour that brings it up close and personal is opening the show with Augustana, a fresh, young band that easily could have intimidated a lesser talent.

Fronted by Dan Layus, the group knows the power of dynamics, building a textured tapestry of sound with its superior musicianship. At times, there's a Dylanesque feel to music, especially when Layus brings out the harmonica. Then the bandmates break into an all-out rocker, and in front of your eyes, you're seeing a band hardly out of the gate reinventing itself all over again.

It wasn't lost on Sunday's crowd, which rewarded Augustana's efforts with a thunderous standing ovation, nearly unheard-of for most opening bands.

The night's shared bill is a powerful one, especially because you can see in Augustana the musical underpinnings that brought the Goo Goo Dolls to this point. Both bring something positive to the partnership, and for Sunday's fans, it was a true win-win.v
