Goo Goo Dolls revealed to be Centennial capstone

Issue date: 2/28/07 Section: News

The University of West Georgia has announced what could be the largest event of the Centennial Celebration as it revealed last Thursday the spring semester will culminate in a concert by the top-selling band The Goo Goo Dolls. The concert will be held at the new Centennial Field, located next to the Z-6 and Arbor View Apartments on Thursday April 26 at 7 p.m. with gates opening at 6 p.m.

"Preparations began more than nine months ago following a request from the Centennial Celebration Steering Committee to bring a great event for our students," explained Matthew Clay, director of educational technology services and coordinator of the concert. "UWG was added to the Goo Goo Dolls tour and they will bring the opening artist."

Tickets for the event are $35 plus tax, with a maximum of 4 tickets per student or faculty member. The tickets are available only at the UWG Bookstore (cash, VISA and MasterCard only, no checks will be accepted). Tickets for the general public will be released on Saturday March 10, providing any remain. "So many people in this community generously support the university and we know they will want to attend this incredible event," Clay noted. He also states that 100% of the ticket price is going to the artists to cover the cost of the event; no funds will be withheld by the University.

The Goo Goo Dolls were formed in 1986 in Buffalo, New York by guitarist/vocalist Johnny Reznik and bassist/vocalist Robby Takac. Mike Malinin joined the band in 1995 on drums/percussion. Their hit single, Let Love In, has recently been on the Top Ten charts. The band became well known when their hit "Iris" was featured on the soundtrack to the 1998 film City of Angels and on their triple platinum album, Dizzy Up the Girl, that produced the additional single hits "Slide," "Black Balloon," "Broadway" and "Dizzy." "Iris" stayed on the Billboard charts at number one for 18 weeks and was nominated for three Grammy's.

A small "Meet and Greet" with the artists is scheduled prior to the concert and drawings to attend will be held on local radio station KISS 102.7. For more information on the Goo Goo Dolls and the concert, stay tuned to concert partners KISS 102.7, UTV13, phone 678-839-LIVE or visit the website at www.westga.edu/live.

Yeah the only band I remember coming to play at my college was Chicago.

Colleges love to use this word "capstone". I suppose it makes for a more interesting title than
"GA goes GAGA over Goo Goo"...   Roll Eyes
