Band looks back on 20 years on the road

The Goo Goo Dolls continued their string of hit songs last year when their latest single, “Let Love In,” cracked the Top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Adult Contemporary chart.

“Let Love In” was the band’s 12th Top 10 single and is the title track on their current gold-certified album. “Let Love In” is the Buffalo, New York, band’s eighth album since forming in 1986.

Bassist Robby Takac recently discussed what it has been like being on the road for 20 years.

Did you ever think you would be together for 20 years?

Never, ever. I don’t think you think about that when you’re that age. The things you think about are the things of the moment. As we grew into this over the years, it’s just become more and more part of our lives. I almost can’t imagine not doing it.

What’s kept you guys going?

Early on, little victories. Being able to sell out of clubs for the first time, being able to play out of the country for the first time, selling a lot of records for the first time. Now we are sort of trying to rediscover how this music industry operates. It’s pretty amazing to watch the struggling that seems to be going on within the music industry itself.

How do you think “Let Love In” stands up to your previous efforts?

I felt like between “Dizzy Up the Girl” and “Gutterflower” as though our process had closed down a little bit, and we sort of entered this dangerous area of self-censorship where we were not trying things because we automatically assumed they weren’t going to work. On this record, we tried a lot more things and discovered a few of those things worked very well. We were able to incorporate some new things that I don’t think we would have if we would have stayed with our old process.

You sing two songs on the album. How do you and Johnny Rzeznik decide whose songs are going to be on the album?

It’s just sort of what happens. We never really talk about it. We write songs, and the record sort of comes together as it does.

Your two songs sound grittier than the other songs. Do you think you bring a different flavor to the band?

I like when records tend to have a bit of a journey to them, from beginning to end. For me, it’s always just been making sure we put out the best records possible. Having those different types of music on the record makes it a little nicer journey from beginning to end.

You guys started as a college band and now you have been embraced by everyone. Have you had fans who have stayed with you throughout the years?

The crowds are getting wild. It’s crazy. The age range is from 12-year-old to 60-year-old. It’s just crazy. That just happens when you have been around for a little while. We don’t look back at our second record and say, “We need to sound more like that.” That will never happen with us. We are just going to keep moving forward.
