The Dolls want to wow Eastern Illinois University Goo Goo Dolls promise big shows, small venues in second leg of tour By KATE HENDERSON, Staff Writer [email protected] CHARLESTON -- A chart-topping band will be in Charleston to “Let Love In” next month adding to the list of over 250 shows they’ve done already. Goo Goo Dolls vocalist and bass guitarist Robby Takac said the band recently came off a one-month break in their “Let Love In” tour and started up again with a different kind of venue. “Now we’re doing the smaller tour of theaters and things like that, which is a bit of a different experience,” Takac said. “This is the first leg of the tour where we actually get to get out there to a room full of 100 percent Goo Goo Doll fans.” The Goo Goo Dolls, who will be playing in Charleston March 4 in Lantz Arena at 8 p.m., also have a new stage set and lighting for this part of the tour. “It’s very different than the summer set,” Takac said. “We’ve also incorporated a lot of video and things like that. Spectacle was something you need when you want to have an effect on a room of 10,000 people.” The trio -- singer/guitarist Johnny Rzeznik, bassist Robby Takac, and drummer Mike Malinin, all Buffalo, NY, natives -- have set the record for the artist with the most Top 10 hits in Hot AC history with twelve, beating out their nearest competitors, Matchbox Twenty and Sheryl Crow, who have ten apiece. The band’s twelfth Top 10 single, “Let Love In,” is the title track to their current gold-certified album, which was released by Warner Bros. Records on April 25th. Takac said this album, the Goo Goo Dolls’ eighth, was done with a new producer, making it that much more different. “We sort of felt like we were in danger of having repeated ourselves a little bit,” Takac said. “We felt that we needed to bring a little bit different motivation in the room to have a different attack and perspective.” Glenn Ballard, who has worked with artists from Wilson Phillips to P.O.D., became producer. Takac said working with Ballard taught the band a few things. “He would remind us, ‘look, you guys are making a record that people are waiting for,’ not that we never felt that, but once in a while you lose perspective I think,” he said. Takac said the band strives hard to find their own voice in an industry with so many bands that sound alike. “I think we were at that point trying to find our own voice and that’s still where we’re at,” he said. “We want to make sure we have our own voice and we’re not borrowing too much from one place and most importantly that we’re not repeating ourselves.” Takac said as for the future, right now it’s looking bright because the band is building a new studio right now to start their next album in September. Tickets for the March 4 show, which features the band Augustana as the opening act, are currently on sale at the EIU ticket office. Tickets are $12 for EIU students and $17 for the general public. All tickets can be purchased through the MLK Jr. Union Ticket Office (second floor, west wing) between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. For ticket information call 217-581-5122. University Board Concerts is sponsoring the performance on EIU’s campus. Takac also said the band has partnered with an organization called USA Harvest which collects canned goods. He encouraged concert-goers to bring some non-perishable canned food items to donate. Contact Kate Henderson at [email protected]or 238-6858 http://www.jg-tc.com/articles/2007/02/17/news/news005.txt
