Fans go ga-ga for the Goo Goo Dolls

Critic's Column
Issue date: 2/15/07 Section: Culture

If you haven't already heard about the Goo Goo Dolls/Augustana concert, you've probably been living under a rock. I heard of and saw so many UTC students going, it should have been a requirement to graduate. Or at least extra credit for a music appreciation class. So, if you were one of the few who did not venture to Memorial Auditorium, you missed a great show.

The show actually started on time, which seemed very un-rock n' roll of them. And everyone seemed relatively sober too. Augustana was the opening act. I'll admit that I don't know much about this band. They look like most "emo" acts do. Skinny jeans, vintage t-shirts and scraggly hair seem to be all the rage amongst the kids these days. I didn't think their sound was particularly original either.

Heartbreak, pain and suffering all sound the same after awhile. Cheer up, kids, life isn't that bad. You're living out your dream and playing for hundreds of screaming fans. Write a song about that instead.

I was really excited when the moment finally arrived and the Goo Goo Dolls took the stage after an introduction of a series of bright flashing lights and guitar riffs. Lead singer John Rzeznik looked every bit the rock star in his baggy camouflage pants and angled hair cut.

I wish I could have been the guy who handed John his guitars after every song. Isn't that a nice way to make a living? Do you need a college degree to do that? What am I doing here?

The band played hit after hit. Have they ever released a song that didn't become overwhelming popular? The Dolls played a good mix of old hits ("Black Balloon" and "Broadway") and new ones ("Give a Little Bit" and "Stay with You"). These guys have been doing this forever and you can tell. They sounded like true professionals. They connected with the crowd by talking to everyone and grabbing hands.

The only thing that gave that away was when John seemed to get frustrated after one song and threw his guitar. Ouch. There goes thousands of dollars.

The bassist, Robbie Takac, had a lot of energy. He constantly bounced around on stage. Though he really seems to love what he does, I don't really care for his voice. The songs he sang seemed so different from the usual Dolls sound. Honestly, I always skipped his songs on the CD and I wished I could have done that at the concert.

The rendition of "Iris" was by far the best part of the show. John turned over the chorus to the audience and we all sang the gut-wrenching lyrics. Such a bonding moment with a bunch of strangers I'll never see again.

It's great that the Goo Goo Dolls are still around after all these years, playing for fans young and old alike.

I know tell me about it! It was hardly the originality of the title that made me read this...

I cringe every time I see a new article with this headline .... which, unfortunately, is quite frequently.  I'll bet the journalist is sitting there at his typewriter (he's old school), clicking away when suddenly it strikes him.  I'll call the article "Ga-Ga for Goo Goo!"  That's it, I'm soooo clever.
