Goo Goo Dolls mellow, but still passionate BY TOM NETHERLAND SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Feb 1, 2007 Goo Goo Dolls When: 7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday Where: 9:30 Club, Washington Tickets: Sold out Info: (202) 265-0930 or www.googoodolls.com Form a rock band. Buy a van. Tour the country. Bet on the big time. Trends come and go. Then, finally, your day comes. So it went for the Goo Goo Dolls, which started in 1986. Life changed when its single "Name" rocketed up the charts in 1995. "All of a sudden, people were at the shows and they weren't all punk-rock kids," said band co-founder Robby Takac. "We weren't even on the radar before that." The Goo Goo Dolls will be at the 9:30 Club in Washington on Monday and Tuesday. Both shows are sold out. Though somewhat grounded after time at the top, the three-man band from Buffalo remains as impassioned about music as ever. Takac said that as time goes by, the band members are gravitating back to their roots, at least geographically. "I can barely believe that it's been 20 years," Takac said by phone recently from his home in Los Angeles. "Johnny [Rzeznik] and I are opening up a recording studio in Buffalo, and we'll start our new record there in September." Tepid response greeted the group's previous album, its eighth, "Let Love In." Takac said the forthcoming album will benefit from being recorded in Buffalo. "We get some pretty serious vibes in Buffalo," he said. "It feels like being in Buffalo makes more sense to be around people who have known us for 40-some years." But why not Los Angeles, one of the largest recording centers in the world? "The overwhelming vibe in L.A. is to not turn around too long here," Takac said. "You'll get a knife blade in your back." Meanwhile, there's a world tour to complete. "We're going to Japan, Australia and the Pacific Rim," Takac said. What's it like to be a member of the Goo Goo Dolls, walking onstage and being greeted by screaming fans? "I can never remember the first 20 to 30 seconds," Takac said. "I give it 175 percent. I give it all. We're all about the crowd. The energy is reciprocated. The best shows are the shows when the crowd is going nuts." Most fans who hopped onboard the Goo Goo Dolls bandwagon in the last 10 years probably wouldn't have been fans of the band 10 years before. And to those who see only mansions and millions when they conjure the Goo Goo Dolls, consider their past. "In the early days it was like, 'Where are we going to sleep tonight?'" Takac said. "We'd be in like Rapid City and didn't have any money. We were three kids riding around in a van trying to get to the next gig." Formed as a largely punk band, the Goo Goo Dolls changed as years passed. As alternative rockers such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam established a new rock order, the Goo Goo Dolls altered their sound. More mellow now -- particularly since the mid-'90s -- oh yeah. Limp-noodle rockers, no. "We're still that loud rock band that rode around in a van with dirty mattresses." http://www.timesdispatch.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=RTD%2FMGArticle% 2FRTD_BasicArticle&%09s=1045855936364&c=MGArticle&cid=1149192953249&path=!weekend!music

| Damn. They're wasting no time getting in the studio. Of course we all know that doesn't mean anything, but let's get the LLI era done with as soon as possible. September? Hmm. I'm gonna have to find some excuse to live in downtown Buffalo for a few months...

| Hahaha! I think it's enitrely possible he's taken this "WE'RE OLD NOW" attitude so far that he doesn't remember his own actual age anymore...
