Goo Goo Dolls concert helping hunger

A Goo idea
Reader Patricia Evert of Dyer wrote me a letter this week asking me to help promote a good cause.
On Friday, the musical group the Goo Goo Dolls perform at First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre (formerly Tweeter Center) in Tinley Park, Ill.
One of our music writers, Tim Shellberg, has a great preview story about the concert and an interview with bass player Robby Takac, in Friday's OntheGo section.
Evert asked me to let readers know the band has partnered with U.S.A. Harvest, a nonprofit outreach program to stop hunger, and fans attending this week's concert are asked to bring as many nonperishable food items as possible to donate. U.S.A. Harvest will deliver all of the donated items to our area homeless shelters that very night.
Evert goes on to write:
"Just so you know, I am NOT associated with the band, U.S.A Harvest or any other promotional organization. I AM, however, a huge fan of this band and their music and I am an even bigger fan of anyone attempting to do some good for others. The members of the Goo Goo Dolls seem like a group of good guys who have entertained us with 20 years of great music and who are also trying to do something good for people in less fortunate positions in life."

Thank you for your letter Patricia and I'm always happy to help a good cause. As for my in-print passion for mentioning our East Chicago game show claim-to-fame Palmer, a search of our archive shows my last mention was April 18, 2006, just about four months ago. But at your request, I'll try to give Betsy a break!
As for the Goo Goo Dolls, I agree they seem like a great group. Like me, lead singer Johnny Rzeznik, 40, is even Polish, so he must be a good guy, right? He had a roller coaster start, losing both of his parents by the age of 16 and then raised by his four older sisters.
He appeared in the 2002 Walt Disney World Christmas Parade and performed with LeAnn Rimes in concert in 2004.
He also provided a song for the Walt Disney Pictures' 2002 animated feature film "Treasure Planet," which also featured the voices of David Hyde Pierce, Emma Thompson and Martin Short.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert Friday, which also features Counting Crows, range from $25-$70. This weekend, the group will travel on to Springfield, Ill. to perform at the Illinois State Fair.
