With little to crow about, rock fans toss support behind Goo Goo Dolls BY KENDRA SLEDZINSKI -- STAFF WRITER 08/12/2006 The Counting Crows were supposed to play ’round here, but they didn’t, much to the chagrin of 7,000 fans Friday night at Toyota Pavilion at Montage Mountain. Before the show, fans lined up to get free tickets the venue offered to remaining shows in order to compensate for the Crows’ absence — which was due to an illness. Despite knowing — thanks to the Internet, some said — many came anyway. “It’s pretty disheartening,” said Chris DeFelice, 26, of Montague, N.J., “but any sensible human being could understand illness can dampen anyone’s plans.” Just because the headliner wasn’t there didn’t mean the crowd didn’t enjoy itself. Heads bobbed to South Carolina’s the Working Title, the four-piece alt-pop rock band opening the show at 7:45 p.m. and impressing the audience. Singer Joel Hamilton led the band through a chilling cover of Bjork’s “Human Behavior,” invoking the mid-’90s flashback the night’s lineup promised. The Goo Goo Dolls made up for the Crows no-show. Frontman Johnny Rzeznik charmed the crowd with family friendly hits, never once giving the rock-star attitude the band’s success could give him. The Goo Goo Dolls rushed the stage, bringing the crowd to its feet with “Slide,” “Big Machine” and “Black Balloon.” Mr. Rzeznik mused about Scranton, telling the crowd how he enjoyed roaming the downtown and bought his first train set in the Electric City. He also didn’t hesitate to get political, even if sarcastic, urging audiences to buy the band’s new album or the terrorists would win. He did the same a few songs later before launching into “Name,” asking if the crowd was searched instrusively. The song was interrupted by random objects thrown up to the man who was the focus of many females’ camera screens. Bassist Robby Takac walked around stage barefoot, singing a few old Goo Goo Dolls songs, but relinquishing the microphone back to Mr. Rzeznik for other hits like “Iris,” “Here Is Gone” and “Broadway.” The main attraction might have been missing in action, but the energetic Goo Goo Dolls pleased the audience regardless, with a live show just as polished as the studio versions of their songs. http://www.thetimes-tribune.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=17046741&BRD=21 85&PAG=461&dept_id=416046&rfi=6 ©The Times-Tribune 2006 Stay True & Rock On!
