http://www.herald-review.com/articles/2006/08/11/life/entertainment/1016 957.txt Goo Goo Dolls anticipate different audience at State Fair gig By ASHLEY RUEFF H&R Staff Writer The Goo Goo Dolls are looking forward to performing for a different kind of audience at the Illinois State Fair Aug. 19 with the Counting Crows. "There are tons of people at a state fair that wouldn't get to a rock concert otherwise," said Robby Takac, founding member and bassist for the Goos. "This is generally a situation where if someone wants to see the show, they're going to get there." The two bands are about halfway through their U.S. tour and Takac has learned there's no telling which band will get the best response from the audience each night. "You've got no control over what's going to go on in front of you. The only control you have is what's going to go on the stage," he said. "You just go out there and give it your all." Their all is what the audience can expect from the optimistic Goo Goo Dolls, who seem to have caught some of their own inspiration from their latest album "Let Love In." Lead singer John Rzeznik, drummer Mike Malinin and Takac are finding more importance in their music than ever before, Takac said. "It's starting to feel like there's a bit of purpose here, and we're finding our niche." The eighth album from the Goos was released in April 2006, packed with feel-good tracks and a positive message. "There's an awful lot of screwed up stuff going on in the world," Takac said. "The one thing that people need to realize is that before anything can be fixed, there has to be some optimism." The Goo Goo Dolls started as a punk-based band with their first release in 1987. They've since went on to make Pop chart-toppers like "Name," "Slide," "Black Balloon," and the Grammy nominated "Iris," synonymous with the movie "City of Angels." Singles from the new album like "Stay With You" and "Give A Little Bit" have made their way to the radio, while "Better Days" was actually adopted by CNN as a theme song for their coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the trials that followed. "It's such an obvious example of a larger picture," Takac said. He often sees fans interpreting their songs to be very important on a personal level, and "Better Days" was a song the nation could interpret together, he said. "It's sort of a bigger representation of what happens. That's probably the biggest pay off in this whole thing to know that you've successfully made that connection. That's a huge gift to be able to receive from people." After the U.S. tour, the Goos will head to Europe where they've been selling out shows for the first time in their career. "This will be our fifth sold-out show in the past three months (in Europe)," Takac said. "I don't know what happened." Once touring has wrapped up, the trio will head back to their hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., to work on their ninth album. As long as the Goos can continue to evolve their music and work together, Tacak said their fans can expect to see them around. "We've been out here waving the flag for this for 20 years, and we're not about to stop now." WHO: Goo Goo Dolls WHERE: Illinois State Fair Grandstand WHEN: 8 p.m. Sat.
