GOO GOO DOLLS ROCK ON!
Band proves to be a real crowd-pleaser

Who needs the Counting Crows?

Hundreds of concertgoers at Wednesday night's Goo Goo Dolls concert at Bethel Woods sure didn't.

Before they cancelled their appearance due to illness, the Counting Crows were scheduled to co-headline the show. Even though it was made official before noon, some tailgating fans, an hour before the show, weren't aware the band pulled out.

"I'm definitely bummed out, but I haven't heard the Goo Goo Dolls yet," said 37-year-old Pam Rampolla from West Milford, N.J. She and her three friends were taking advantage of a kids-free night out and were listening to a Counting Crows CD while enjoying a perfect summer night. "I'm out with my girlfriends, so we'll have a good time no matter what."

Bethel Woods staff were handing out fliers about the lineup change in the parking lot and signs were posted by the box office. Unofficial reports stated about 800 tickets were returned.

But in the end, the fact that the Crows weren't there didn't deter hundreds of fans.

The Working Title, a quintet of alt/rockers dressed in T-shirts, jeans and sneakers, went on at 7:30 p.m. and totally impressed the crowd with originals, as well as a cover of Bjork's "Human Behavior." Before the group's third song, front-man Joel Hamilton said to the crowd, "The Counting Crows are bummed they couldn't be here, especially Adam, but we're still gonna have a good time tonight."

With that, the band played on until 8:15 p.m.

At 9 p.m., the Goo Goo Dolls kicked off its hour and a half performance with "Stay With You," the first single off its new album, "Let Love In," which it's touring in support of. It followed with the hugely popular "Slide," which lead singer Johnny Rzeznik dedicated to the fans. After a brief mention of the Crows, Rzeznik yelled, "I want to please you! What can we do to please you?" to which the crowd responded with yells and screams.

Between songs, Rzeznik spoke about his dislike of President Bush, how he knew he "made it" when he got a stalker, and joked about how he feels dirty after watching "The O'Reilly Factor."

That's a great review for them. I love reading the positive stuff like that. It's so much more reflective of why we're all fans. I'm so happy for them that despite the Crows not playing they still pleased the crowd. That's awesome!

That one cracked me up big time! I was watching the Daily Show last night, and they mentioned O'Reilly, and it kicked me back to what John said. I'll always think of that now whenever O'Reilly is mentioned.
John was definately in good form that evening.

I know people have been upset this part of the tour because John hasn't been doing much talking with the crowd. I don't take that as disinterest on his part I take that as time limitations. I honestly believe they'd rather play an extra song for us than chat. See the old John we know and love comes back when there's more time for him to be playful.
