I think the song Carmen is about a friendship that
was very close, but didn't work out. Perhaps a
best friend or a romantic relationship. As
'Carmen' can be male or female. The relationship
was obviously close and she learned a lot from
it-- but she doesn't know if she can go back to
it. Perchance she has changed. It reminds me a
bit about what Sarah McLachlan said in a VH-1
interview, that she sometimes felt responsible
for things that were truly out of her control. If
I may paraphrase. Chances are Paula has felt the
same and wrote about it.
