Unforgiven II

Hi. I'm spanish and have a few problems with
english, as you can read.
I was reading the Unforgiven II Lyrics and I found
one strange sentence. Does the sentence "If you
can understand the me, then I can understand the
you" make sense for you?
I would have said "if you can understand TO me,
then I can understand TO you". Is the first one a
mistake, or does it have a different meaning?.
